The value of craftsmanship conveyed by one of Japan's finest craftsman-ship workshops

Stone Customize" allows you to select from a wide variety of expressive stones to order a unique ring. Once an order is received from the customer, the ring is manufactured in a workshop in Japan.

The casting process, which involves carefully adjusting the base metal to match the unique shape and thickness of the stone, requires exceptional craftsmanship.

The organic texture created by human hands. We value the sparkle of "Stone Customized" as it is, and our skilled Japanese craftsmen create them so that they can be delivered to you as soon as possible after you place your order.

We visited the workshop where "Stone Customized" is made and spoke with Mr. Takahashi, who is involved in the management of the workshop, to learn about the background of its production.

How and why did you get into the jewelry industry?

The jewelry workshop that my father started was a prefab shed built on our family's property when I was a child. Jewelry was very close to me, as I would come home from kindergarten and play with the craftspeople, and I would turn plaster into clay.

I studied textiles at university, and after graduation I worked as a decorator for interior spaces and as a bookbinder, but I had already decided in my heart that eventually I would join my father's workshop.

At the time, my father's workshop was mainly OEM, manufacturing on consignment from clients, but I thought it would be great if I could join his workshop and start designing jewelry, making use of my past experience. To that end, I joined a jewelry planning company on my father's advice and learned about manufacturing. I had some idea of the jewelry manufacturing process, so my understanding of it was quick.

A Flexible Approach from a Long-established Jewelry Studio

ARTIDA OUD is a brand that values the beauty of stones as they are. We believe that the "stone customized" jewelry we are commissioned to create embodies our brand's philosophy of creating a frame that makes the most of each stone according to its individuality. Could you tell us about your thoughts and commitment?

We select and propose the best way to showcase the stones as beautifully as possible.

We also carefully create our jewelry so that when it reaches the customer's hands, they will be satisfied with the finished product and wear it for a long time.

Stone customization" can only be made by skilled craftsmen.

What do you enjoy, get absorbed in, or aim for?

I am most happy when I can give shape to what the brand and customers want, and create jewelry that they are satisfied with. It makes me feel that all my hard work is worth it.

I wonder if I can make the best use of the techniques that I am good at at this workshop. High product quality, cost, and time are also required, so we consult with our craftsmen, make many prototypes, and propose the best approach.

We may change it if we find a better method while we are producing the product. We are constantly thinking about whether this is the best way.

Synergistic Effect of "Sharing" Each Craftsman's Skills

Mr. Takahashi's workshop has a high level of craftsmanship and produces very high quality jewelry. Please tell us what you are doing to improve your skills and develop new techniques.

Sharing, I guess. Each craftsman has developed his own way of doing things, so even if the same piece of jewelry is made by different craftsmen, the finished product will be different.

The tools used are similar, but the way they are used is different. Craftsmen have their own strengths and weaknesses. If we find good techniques or tools, we share them to improve the quality of the entire workshop.

A group of craftsmen who can do all the processes by themselves with high quality.

Taken together, they are able to do everything in their own unique way. It is proof that you have skilled craftsmen, isn't it?

That's right. I believe that brands that are satisfied with the finished product trust us and ask us to do their work.

In most large factories, the same tools are given to each craftsman, and he is in charge of a single process. In this way, it is possible to finish a large quantity of the same product at a certain quality. But in my workshop, I trust the craftsmen and leave the work to them. I gather craftsmen who can do all the processes with high quality.

The Value of Craftsmanship Created by Skilled Craftsmen

Q. Do you have a message you would like to convey?

I would like to convey the message that craftsmanship by artisans is valuable.

The price of raw materials continues to soar, but it is difficult to raise the top price of products. This means that we have no choice but to cut wages, and the industry is still in a difficult situation where we cannot give craftspeople a fair profit. The industry is strangling itself by taking on work at low wages. This is one of the reasons why it is so difficult to develop young people.

I want to sell good products at a price that is commensurate with their quality, and I believe that if we can meet the required quality, our customers will be satisfied.

I want to create an environment where we can communicate the value of our products and receive compensation for our craftsmanship, and create an environment where young people can easily grow up. I believe this is my mission.

Mr. Takahashi
Graduated from Tama Art University. After graduation, he worked for an interior space decoration and jewelry planning company before becoming the managing director of a jewelry production studio founded by his father, Hirofumi Takahashi, in 2014, where he has been active in the jewelry industry. In the jewelry industry, where the division of labor is the norm, Mr. Takahashi's jewelry production studio is one of the rare ones that can consistently handle everything in-house, from planning and design to prototype, casting, finishing, and stone setting, and has collaborated with numerous brands to date.
